The Borders Gliding Club gained second place in the UK Sports Club of the Year Award of 2003.

This is a prestigious award presented by the Foundation for Sport and the Arts and the Central Council for Physical Recreation.

Clubs must first compete to win the nomination from their national sports governing body as the club setting standards of best practice for their sport. The nominated clubs then compete in the "short"-list of several hundred clubs for the national title. The Borders Gliding Club was pipped at the post by a worthy winner, the Dartford Judokwai, but we were pleased to be the first gliding club to reach the finals.

In Memory.

This memorial was unveiled in the grounds of the Borders (Milfield) Gliding Club on Friday 24 May 2002 in memory of the 46 airmen who lost their lives operating from Royal Air Force Milfield during the Second World War.

The memorial, designed and created by club member Peter Fairness, was unveiled by the Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland, Sir John Riddell and dedicated by local vicar, the Rev Canon Brian Seaman.

Attending the very moving ceremony were several of the airmen and airwomen who served there during that time.

Wave.

Thanks for this picture taken on the 31st March 2002 at 8000ft by Phil Punt of Bowland Forest whilst on their club expedition to Milfield.

Is it a Bird ? Is it a plane ?.

No, it's Andy Bardgett in his LS4, above Andy Henderson (where else) who took this picture from his ASW20 at 7000ft. Never mind Andy one day you might be as good !

Size really does matter.

This picture was taken at Borders by Roger Fielding from Camphill. It shows an Ash25 with a K21 and tug at the rear. And yes there is gold (height) at the end of this rainbow.

The Soaring Season

This picture shows a flight on the 1st January 2002 proving that we fly all the year round in Northumberland.

Thanks to our club president James Hogarth BEM for this one. Taken some years ago the picture shows a near miss. A few captions that spring to mind from Jim are :

1. N.O.T.A.M.S what does that mean?
2. The committee talked about a new tug but that's ridiculous.
3. I do believe you can do multiple tows with some tugs.
4. Who said all clear above and behind !!!!
5. Could it be a ghost ship?
6. The yanks always did manage to get lost on the way back.!!!

After his experience Jim said something along the lines of "I nearly sh*? myself" or words to that effect.

Wave

Thanks to Janet Ladley (8 Ball Soaring Assoc), who took this photograph in wave while flying with our CFI Robin Johnson over North Northumberland during their September 2001 visit.
